Maura Hesdon  -  President

Maura is the General Manager of Shoemaker Construction Co. and has 20 years of leadership experience working within the male-dominated construction industry. In her role, Maura provides executive management oversight. More importantly, Maura is tasked with ensuring overall project and corporate success as well as customer satisfaction.  She facilitates teamwork between all disciplines of the project team and serves as the Owner’s executive level contact with Shoemaker.   As General Manager for Shoemaker, Maura also acts in a leadership role as part of The Butz Family of Companies - an enterprise of construction companies which includes Shoemaker along with Alexander Building Construction Co. and Alvin H. Butz, Inc. During her 20 years in the construction industry, Maura has overseen the successful completion of 50 projects valued at more than $1 billion. Using this wealth of experience, she is able to help the project team defy navigate potential challenges that might otherwise delay the Owner’s project or add unnecessary expenses to the budget. Her success managing and overseeing construction projects has earned her the respect of her coworkers - both men and women alike. Away from the work site, Maura is also a regional leader in the pursuit of making the construction industry more accessible. She co-founded Mentoring a Girl in Construction (MAGIC) Philadelphia, in 2009 where she and others are able to introduce school-aged girls to possible careers within the industry. Maura also works with institutions such as Drexel University and the Carpenters' Company of the City and County of Philadelphia to help promote inclusion and careers within the construction industry. Mary Gaffney  -  Treasurer

Mary Gaffney is President and owner of a family-owned mechanical contracting business GEM Mechanical Services.  The firm specializes in the installation and maintenance of mechanical and plumbing systems for commercial clients. The Company also provides mechanical service work for existing customers and holds building maintenance contracts.  GEM Mechanical is located outside Philadelphia.  GEM Mechanical is nationally certified as a Women Owned Business Enterprise (WBENC), and federally certified as a Women Owned Small Business (WOSB).

Mary’s background and experience includes 36 years of project management experience ($25K to $50 Million in size), construction management, AutoCAD/Revit, and computer services. Mary has a Master of Business Administration degree, a Bachelor’s of Science, Management Information Systems from Widener University, and executive leadership education from Wharton and the Tuck School of Business. Mary is OSHA 30 Certified.

Mary is passionate about sharing her business and construction knowledge with young women.  She is honored to be involved in the NAWIC Philadelphia Foundation MyWIC camp each year that provides a week long educational experience for girls to learn about the local trades and businesses.   “MyWIC provides a meaningful learning experiences to young women that at the very least provides food for thought as they contemplate their future in the workforce”, states Mary. 

Mary is currently Chairperson of a lego block building competition called Block Kids.  The competition is for students in 1st through 6th Grade.  Block Kids is a national program where the winner of the local competition advances on to the Eastern Regional competition, with a potential to be entered into the National competition.

Mary resides in Edgmont, PA with her husband of 40 years.  Besides being in business together, they share one of there proudest achievements in raising four successful, college-degreed children.  Mary is a avid Flyers fan and intends to visit every national hockey arena to see her team play.  Email Mary Gaffney. 

Angelina Perryman - DIRECTOR

Vice President of Administration for Perryman Building and Construction Services, Inc, a third generation construction management firm established in 1961.  Ms. Perryman oversees the administrative department including contracts, risk avoidance, human resources, technology, and third generation strategic and corporate planning.  Ms. Perryman received her Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA and Executive Leadership Education from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth University in Hanover, NH.   Email Angelina Perryman

Fern Gookin  -  director

Fern works for a full-service recycling company, Revolution Recovery, which helps recycle and reuse construction & demolition waste materials. She also founded the nonprofit RAIR (Recycled Artists in Residency), where artists can use the recycling center as their studio and create new works with the discarded materials.  She is currently the Immediate Past Chairman of Green Building United, the Philadelphia Chapter of USGBC as well as an active participant in many industry associations including NAWIC Philadelphia.  Email Fern Gookin.

angela hendrix  -  director

As GBCA's Director of Education and Professional Development, Angela brings 10+ years of event experience to help further cement GBCA’s position as industry leaders in education and professional development. With expertise in program development, promotion, and execution, Angela comes to GBCA from the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, where she orchestrated events with upwards of 700+ attendees, servicing the association’s more than 4,000 member companies.

In addition to running GBCA’s educational programs, seminars and workshops, Angela handles the tuition reimbursement and scholarship programs, and the workforce development efforts of the association.

Angela sits on the Philadelphia University, Drexel University, and Community College of Philadelphia Construction Management Advisory Committees. She is also a volunteer for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Eastern PA.

Angela earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from Temple University’s Fox School of Business, and lives in South Philadelphia. She enjoys traveling abroad, Philly sports teams, and renovating her South Philly row home with her husband.  Email Angela Hendrix.

MARTY McCARTHY  -  director

Marty McCarthy, CPA, CCIFP, is the managing partner of McCarthy & Company, PC.  Known to be a proactive and astute businessman, he is valued for bringing issues to a client’s attention before the client even knows that something may be wrong. Marty keeps a close eye on what is happening in his clients’ businesses and industries, as well as changes to the tax law, accounting pronouncements, and government regulations so clients can focus on their businesses. Clients trust Marty’s thoughtful and candid advice. 

He has been passionate about serving the construction industry from the beginning of his career in public accounting. Since most of his clients are construction contractors, Marty has a deep understanding of how to help clients achieve long-term success in that industry. Well-respected by sureties and bankers for the high quality of his work, Marty helps clients obtain the financing needed to grow their businesses. 

As the leader of McCarthy & Company, Marty knows the importance of having sincere relationships with clients and employees. His comprehensive approach to client service and management has earned him the reputation of being an accessible, responsive, and down-to-earth leader, as well as a futurist thinker. Marty values the relationships that he has with each client and member of his team, which is evident by the fact that most are loyal to the firm and happy to be part of the McCarthy & Company family. 

A 1993 graduate of Villanova University with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting, Marty holds the well-respected Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional (CCIFP) designation from the Institute of Certified Construction Industry Financial Professionals (ICCIFP). He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA), where he serves on the Council and the Construction Industry Conference Committee.  Marty is also a member of the Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA), National Association of Surety Bond Professionals (NASBP), Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), Architectural Glass & Metal Association (AGMA), Construction Association of Eastern Pennsylvania (CAEP), and Utility Transportation Contractors Association (UTCA). 

Considered a thought leader in the construction industry, Marty has presented at numerous conventions including the CFMA Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference. His articles have been published in CE This Week (Construction Executive), Utility and Transportation Contractor (UTCA). and New Jersey CPA. 

An avid golfer and fisherman, Marty played basketball during college and received the Villanova Basketball Alumni Award for his contributions to the program. The Norristown Police Athletic League (PAL) has honored him with its Award of Recognition for years of service to the organization. Marty is also involved in leading firm service projects with the organizations Cradles to Crayons and Operation Gratitude. He is the father of three children - Christopher, Maureen and Sophia.

Erin O'Brien-Hoffman  -  MyWIC Co-Chair

Erin O’Brien-Hofmann is the G.I.F.T (Girls in the Finishing Trades) and VIP (Vocational Internship Program) Program Coordinator/Education Specialist. Her duties include educating  and provide necessary experience, to current High School Students, on the skills and demands of the apprenticeship programs offered at the Finishing Trades Institute of the Mid-Atlantic Region (FTI) (Drywall Finishing, Glazing, Painting, and Paperhanging). The VIP program is used as a stepping-stone for students to progress from classroom to potential Apprentices or Industrial Workers. The 2 year or 188 hour VIP program also affords students construction industry wide recognized certifications in OSHA 10, First Aid, /CPR. Students attend the FTI weekly on specified days during the school year for 15 weeks both their Junior and Senior years in High School. Anytime not in the classroom is spent on the pavement recruiting men and women alike. Erin recently has received a promotion to be the commercial paint apprenticeship program instructor as well.

Erin is a union DC 21 , Local Union 2011  commercial painter with 11 years’ experience in the field. She has worked that time with Schnoll Painting. Responsible for projects including the Comcast Building, Convention Center expansion, Franklin Field, CHOP, TCNJ and much more.

Erin Loves her job and has a passion to reach other women in hopes that they too will consider a career in the building trades. Erin resides in Philadelphia, PA with her husband and her three boys. Her hobbies include working on her own home and helping others by painting interiors and exteriors to beautify their spaces. Erin is a member of NAWIC, CLUW and the AFL-CIO. Email Erin Hofmann
